Sharing is caring!

All the challenges and battles you’ll ever have to take up in your life will always be half physical and half mental.

The most important to master of the two is the mental.

This means that as you are taking up the challenge, have conversations with yourself, remind yourself why you started, what could be gained if you successfully completed the challenge. You already have a lot of wisdom to do this for yourself. If you do it constantly, you will always find it easy to finish the challenge and go the extra mile as well.

The habit of going the extra mile simply means to make more effort than is expected of you and doing it with a positive mental attitude.  It is the act of going above and beyond what is expected. Going the extra mile is the difference between being average versus being one of the top performers in the world.

The habit of going the extra mile

Going the extra mile at the workplace

When it comes to the work environment, one can be paid in two ways;

  • Wages
  • Gaining deep experience in a certain field.

For a young person, one should not only focus on the monetary remuneration that comes with work. The experience is more important. The habit of going the extra mile in a work environment will transform you into a master in your field.

The greatest benefit from the habit of going the extra mile will come to you in due time in form of a changed mental attitude. With time, this will give you more influence among people. The more influence one has, the more likely one is to succeed.

Most people are not willing to go an extra mile at work, while building a relationship, or by simply being kind to a stranger.

If you take time to calculate the habit of going the extra mile, you will soon reap its benefits. You can learn more about how to cultivate a habit by reading The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg

Advantages of going the extra mile

  • It will bring you more opportunities

It’s easier to achieve greatness in this day and age as compared to the past. There are so many distractions and addictions such as social media that people are battling with. If you make it your goal in life to escape such distractions and addictions, focus on your work and go the extra mile, this will bring you to the favourable attention of those who can provide opportunities for your advancement.

Example: Do more than what your boss asks and expects of you at work.

If you are asked to write a report, make it excellent. Proofread it and submit earlier than expected. Go an extra mile with all your other responsibilities. You will be happy and proud of yourself for being diligent. Your boss will be happy too and this will earn you a healthier working environment and even a promotion!

  • It leads to mental growth

You’ve been told that the knowledge you got from school is not enough to sustain you in the current competitive world.

Going the extra mile through taking up online courses and reading non-academic books will lead to your mental growth. This will add to your earning capacity as you will have built resilience and gained new skills.

Drop by a bookshop today and get a book that has nothing to do with what you studied in school. Read it and start your journey towards securing your future.

The habit of going the extra mile

  • You gain physical fitness.

Exercise only starts working after thirty minutes of continuous workout. Most people only stop after the thirty minutes which prevents them from getting their desired results. A lot of people who are physically fit have mastered the art of going the extra mile.

The next time you go for a morning/evening run, or your favourite workout routine, go further than you did last time.

Your body is made up of muscles-train them to be tougher. Being fit also contributes to your mental and general health.

  • You will develop a positive mental attitude.

As you practice the habit of going an extra mile, you will be happy as you are in the service of others. This will, therefore, enable you to have a positive mental attitude towards giving your time to others.

Your time is the greatest gift you can give to people.

When you spot an old person struggling to carry their bags in the streets, help them. And add a  smile while you’re at it 🙂

  • You will be inspired to find even better ways to render service to others.

The more you push yourself to serve others, the more you will continuously seek new and better ways of doing it.

In addition, you will always be happy.  Yes, sometimes people will not appreciate and recognize your kind gestures. Kindness is not about recognition; it’s about being satisfied knowing that you’re a kind-hearted human.

  • You will develop the important quality of personal initiative.

When you learn to initiate something as opposed to waiting to be pushed all the time, people respect you.

The world respects doers. Don’t allow yourself to be labelled a couch potato yet you have a brilliant brain between your ears. Go out there and initiate something. It is an admirable quality.

  • It leads to self-reliance and courage.

Cultivating a habit is hard. It takes a lot of discipline and time. Discipline leads to high self-esteem. Self-esteem leads to courage.

The more time you take going the extra mile on your projects, the more skills you will gain. You will also learn to trust your abilities with time. And that’s how self-reliance will come your way.

The habit of going the extra mile

  • It builds the confidence of others in your integrity.

  • You will destroy your habit of procrastination.

You have already forfeited enough of your brilliance through procrastination. Why not take action from today by going the extra mile?
